Trong Ielts reading dạng bài “Matching paragraph headings” bạn sẽ phải chọn tiêu đề cho từng đoạn văn trong một bài văn hoàn chỉnh từ một danh sách các tiêu đề đã được cho sẵn. Thông thường, sẽ có nhiều tiêu đề cho sẵn hơn so với số lượng đoạn văn trong bài văn, vì vậy bạn sẽ không sử dụng hết chúng, bạn cũng không bao giờ được dùng 1 tiêu đề hơn 1 lần. Bạn chỉ cần viết đúng các con số như i, ii,iii, v.v… Tránh mất thời gian cho việc sao chép hết cả các tiêu đề. Đây là một dạng bài tương đối khó và rất hay gặp trong ielts reading test.
a. Chiến thuật tiếp cận
- Đọc tất cả các tiêu đề và gạch chân những từ khóa.
- Đọc đoạn văn đầu tiên của bài văn, đánh dấu câu chủ đề, các cụm từ và từ vựng liên quan.
- Diễn đạt lại ý chính của đoạn văn trong đầu.
- Đọc tất cả các tiêu đề xem có thấy những từ khóa trong đoạn văn và trong tiêu đề trùng nhau hay không.
- Lựa chọn tiêu đề phù hợp nhất so với ý chính của đoạn văn.
- Tiếp tục và làm tương tự với các đoạn văn tiếp theo.
- Nếu bạn nghĩ, có 2 tiêu đề phù hợp với một đoạn văn, thì bạn nên đánh dấu cả hai và sau đó lựa chọn lại sau.
- Nên gạch bỏ các đáp án đã được lựa chọn.

TEXT:
A. Building stronger and more sophisticated river defences against flooding is the expensive short-term answer. There are simpler ways. Planting trees in highland areas, not just in Europe but in places like Himalayas, to protect people living in low-lying regions like the Ganges Delta, is a cheaper and more attractive solution. Progress is already being made in convincing countries that emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases is causing considerable damage to the environment. But more effort is needed in this direction.
B. And the future? If we are to believe the forecast, it is predicted that two-thirds of the world population will be without fresh water by 2025. But for a growing number of regions of the world the future is already with us. While some areas are devastated by flooding, scarcity of water in many other places is causing conflict. The state of Texas in the United States of American is suffering a shortage of water with the Rio Grande failing to reach the Gulf of Mexico for the first time in 50 years in the spring of 2002, pitting region against region as the vie for water sources. With many parts of the globe running dry drought and increased water consumption, there is now talk of water being the new oil.
C. Other doom-laden estimates suggest that, while tropical areas will become drier and uninhabitable, coastal regions and some low-lying islands will in all probability be submerged by the sea as the polar ice caps melt. Popular exotic destinations now visited by countless tourists will become no-go areas. Today’s holiday hotspot of southern Europe and elsewhere will literally become hotspots – too hot to live in or visit. With the current erratic behavior of the water, it is difficult not to subscribe to such despair.

Các thông tin liên quan nằm trong câu: “If we are to believe the forecast, it is predicted that two-thirds of the world population will be without fresh water by 2025”
Đoạn văn cũng nói lên nguyên nhân của “scarcity of water”, như flooding hay drought.
3. (iii) Nội dung chính của đoạn văn này nêu lên một loạt như điều tiêu cực có thể xảy ra trong tương lai mà không chỉ có “flooding”.
Ví dụ: “as the polar ice caps melt”, “Today’s holiday hotspot of southern Europe and elsewhere will literally become hotspots”.
